HURON — Nearly $21,000 in prize money was divvied up this past weekend at the Original S.D. BBQ Championship, The Backyard BBQ and the F.A.T. Friday Chili Challenge, held at the S.D. State Fairgrounds.
When the smoke had cleared - literally - it was True Smoke BBQ, a husband and wife team from Oronoco, Minn., who carried off most of the prize money and the grand champion trophy in the S.D. BBQ Championships. It was the 11th annual event and drew a deep field of teams to this year’s competition.
True Smoke’s Mike Thompson and his spouse/pit partner Brenda Janvrin Thompson were judged as the top team in both ribs and brisket - worth $350 each, and finished fourth in the pork shoulder judging to claim the top prize of $2,500, the hardware and entry into the American Royal BBQ competition in Kansas City.
Second place went to Twisted Tail, which earned $2,000 as well as a second in ribs, 3rd in brisket, 8th in pork and 9th in chicken.
Bark n’Bones BBQ finished third ($700) and Last Call Heroes BBQ was fourth, earning $500.
The Backyard BBQ competition had two divisions - People’s Choice, as well as a Judged division. Here are the top three in each discipline and division:
People’s Choice (1st $125, 2nd $75, 3rd $50)
Turkey - 1. Team Sasquatch, 2. Shagan Pit, 3. Team Wolfpack.
