Beadle adds 31 new cases in two days

HURON — The state’s two-month surge reached another peak Wednesday and Thursday, and Beadle County was swept up in it, as was the Heartland region.

Wednesday’s numbers brought forth a new single-day record for South Dakota with 445 new COVID-19 positive cases. That was quickly topped with Thursday’s release from the South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) that revealed that 463 new positive cases had been recorded.

The previous high had been 425 recorded August 29, though it has now been since Aug. 18 since the state had less than 100 new positive cases in a day, with 12 days of more than 300 positive cases in that time.

That surge in cases has sent the overall positive cases rising, bringing the state past the 20,000 mark on Thursday, to 20,097.

The surge has also brought the active cases in the state to new records. The state currently has 3,291 active COVID-19 cases.

Thursday also announced eight new deaths statewide. Those eight deaths gave the state 43 for September, making September now the deadliest month of the virus in the state with six more reporting days left.

In Beadle County, Wednesday brought 16 new positive cases and Thursday 15 to add to the county’s tally. The county had not had back-to-back days of double-digit new positive cases since June 13-14.

Active cases rose in the county as well, from 45 on Tuesday to 67 after Thursday’s numbers. In less than 20 days, the active cases in the county have risen by nearly 50 from 18 on Sept. 6-8 to the current 67.

The Heartland region added six new hospitalizations on Wednesday across the seven counties. After Thursday’s numbers from DOH, the Heartland has 161 active COVID-19 cases among seven counties.
