BOULDER, Colo. — Beverly Jane McArthur (née DeGeest), 91, passed away peacefully June 23, 2017, in Boulder, Colo. with her family at her side.
Daughter of William (Bill) and Lois (Loie) DeGeest, Beverly, who was better known as Peggy or Peg, was born and raised in Huron. Peggy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She attended Huron College where she received her BA degree in English in 1945. Peg McArthur was a talented pianist and a soprano vocalist member of several choirs with a superb ear and love for music.
Peg McArthur married Robert (Bob) Wallace McArthur June 27, 1948, in Huron when he returned from service following WWII and settled into a busy and fulfilling life. Peg had six children, five sons, Gregory Robert McArthur, Brian William MacArthur, Kevin Paul McArthur, Thomas Hugh MacArthur and Douglas Cary McArthur, and one daughter, Mary Candace McArthur Massey.
As an active participant and volunteer for the Republican Party, Peg spent many years as a campaign manager, hosting and staffing voter registration and poling sites and attending the Colorado Republican Conventions in Denver, Colo. When it came to discussing politics with Peg there was never any doubt where she stood on controversial bills and legislation. She remained politically active and engaged throughout her lifetime.
Peg was a trusted friend, mentor and advisor to many and is remembered by her family for her love and guidance. She taught English at the High School level and was a real stickler for correct grammar. She was also quite good with numbers and had a career in the banking industry where she readily adapted to the ever changing landscape of account management as it moved from paper ledgers into the computer age. She embraced change and the idea of always keeping an active and engaged mind. She was a voracious reader enjoying sleuthing a good mystery novel, was a competitive card and game player, and especially enjoyed the company of a seasoned bridge foursome. She loved her Colorado Rocky baseball players where she could rattle off their stats by name. She also loved cheering for the Denver Broncos and the University of Colorado Buffalo football teams.
She is survived by five children, Greg, Brian, Tom, Doug and Mary; six daughters-in-law, Mary McArthur, Susan MacArthur, Jeanne McArthur, Kathryn MacArthur, Eliza McArthur and Christine McArthur; one son-in-law, Brian Massey; seven grandchildren, Verity Elizabeth McArthur, Ryan Damon MacArthur, Jesse Damon MacArthur, John Thomas MacArthur, Julia Isabelle McArthur, Christopher Martin Massey, and Carolyn MacArthur Massey; and one great-granddaughter, Elliot Renee MacArthur. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Shirley Fullerton of Huron; her brother-in-law, Paul Thomas of Decatur, Ill.; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Her last wishes were to be cremated and have her ashes scattered in the Aspen groves of the Colorado Rockies which she loved so much. A private celebration of Peg’s life will be held with family and close friends.
Peg was preceded in death by her ex-husband and one son Kevin Paul McArthur.
