Blackhawks rally for victory in Class 11B playoffs

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central needed nearly every second of their 48-minute game against Mt. Vernon-Plankinton to secure a 13-10 victory in the opening round of the Class 11B playoffs on Thursday.
Trey Weber hauled in a 3-yard scoring strike from Trent Kingsbury with just 45 seconds remaining to cap the come-from-behind effort for the Blackhawks, who improved to 8-1.
A 56-yard touchdown run by John Witte at the 7:57 mark of the second quarter opened the scoring in the game and allowed W/WS/SC to carry a 7-0 lead into the half.
Mt. Vernon-Plankinton would go scoreless until there was just 2:41 remaining in the third quarter, when they were awarded a safety as Jesse Hastings tackled Kingsbury in the end zone.

The Titans were then able to take the lead early in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard touchdown run by Hastings. A conversion run by Hastings made it 10-7 with 10:08 to play.
Witte would finish with 210 of the 221 yards rushing for the Blackhawks.
Kingsbury was 4 of 7 passing for 48 yards for W/WS/SC, with Trey Ulmer having two catches for 35 yards and Weber having two catches for 13 yards.
Jordan Hines led the Blackhawks defensively with 7.5 tackles. Witte and Weber each had six tackles, while Wesley Linke had five tackles.
Hastings finished with 54 yards on 15 carries for Mt. Vernon-Plankinton, while Hayden Haak had nine carries for 36 yards and Weston Tobin had seven carries for 33 yards.
Haak was 8 of 20 passing for 89 yards for the Titans, who end the season at 5-4. Dane Rhanek had five catches for 59 yards.
Defensively for Mt. Vernon Plankinton, Thomas Baker and Hunter Pranger each had 6.5 tackles.
Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central will next play in the quarterfinals on Oct. 26.
