Blackhawks, Warbirds to meet for boys’ 281 title

Wolsey-Wessington escapes against Highmore-Harrold

HURON — It will be a title-game rematch, for the championship hardware in the boys’ 281 Conference Tournament, as the Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds and the Sanborn Central-Woonsocket Blackhawks will square off Thursday night for all the marbles.
The two teams played for the conference tournament title last year as well, with Wolsey-Wessington emerging with a 59-46 win.
Here are recaps of the championship semifinals, held Tuesday night at Huron Arena.

Sanborn Central-Woonsocket 58, James Valley Christian 52
Sanborn Central-Woonsocket will return to the 281 Conference Tournament championship game, after the Blackhawks downed the James Valley Christian Vikings 58-52 Tuesday night.
Noah Dickson scored 16 points and cleared nine rebounds for the Blackhawks, who opened an early lead, then withstood a frantic JVC rally in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Trey Weber scored 14 points — including four three-pointers — for SC-W as well, while Trent Kingsbury scored 10 points, had nine boards and led both teams with seven assists. The Blackhawks improve to 8-2 with the win.
James Valley Christian was led by Josh Wieting’s 20-point effort, while Ryan Wager added 13 and had six rebounds and Darrian Hood contributed 12 points. Michael Waldner led the Vikings with seven rebounds and also had four assists.
The Blackhawks will play Wolsey-Wessington Thursday night for the 281 Conference Tournament title at approximately 7:30 p.m., following the girls’ title game, while JVC will play Highmore-Harrold for third place.

Wolsey-Wessington 51, Highmore-Harrold 50

The Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds moved into the championship game of the 281 Conference Tournament Tuesday night, with a 51-50 nailbiter over the Highmore-Harrold Pirates, on a buzzer beater by junior Lynden Williams.
It is the Warbirds’ sixth straight win.
The game was close throughout, as Wolsey-Wessingto jumped out to an early lead, only to see Highmore-Harrold come back to take a slim two-point lead at the half.
The Pirates kept the momentum, building a double-digit lead mid-way through the third quarter, before the Warbirds began chipping away, and Wolsey-Wessington held a one-point lead headed to the final quarter.
A Highmore-Harrold basket with 13 seconds left put the Pirates up 50-49, but Williams hit his fifth field goal of the game as the clock expired to propel the Warbirds to the title game.
Williams ended with 15 points and had 11 rebounds for Wolsey-Wessington, who were led by Brevan Hooks’ 21-point effort, all from behind the three-point arc.
Highmore-Harrold got 20 points and 10 rebounds from Jharet Bloomenrader in the game, while Dylan McDonnell added 17 and Tremaine Eagle Thunder-Alger tossed in 11.
Wolsey-Wessington, now 9-2 on the season, will face Sanborn Central-Woonsocket in a title-game rematch at 7:30 on Thursday night.
Highmore-Harrold, 4-6, will take on James Valley Christian for third place in the conference tournament. Ironically, the two teams also played for third place in last year’s tournament.
