Bobcats earn rivalry win against JVC

FREEMAN — In what is tabbed as the oldest soccer rivalry in South Dakota, Freeman Academy/Freeman/Marion escaped with a 2-1 victory against James Valley Christian on Saturday.

The Vikings put the first goal on the board in the 13th minute, as Isaac Wipf found the net on a free kick.

Freeman Academy/Freeman/Marion would pull even 10 minutes later and the teams would head into the half locked at 1-1.

The Bobcats would score the gamewinner with seven minutes remaining in the game as Lester Artica Rocha inked his second goal of the game.

Freeman Academy/Freeman/Marion finished with 28 shots, while the Vikings had 27 shots. Jonah Niederbaumer finished with 12 saves for JVC, which still leads the all-time series 47-26-5.

In the junior varsity game, the Vikings recorded a 5-0 win.

Niederbaumer and Keeghann Hood each had two goals for the Vikings, while Skylar Thielbar added a goal.

JVC finishes the junior varsity season at 4-2-2.

Both varsity teams will begin postseason play today.

The fourth-seeded Bobcats host Belle Fourche in a 4:30 p.m. matchup.

JVC is the sixth seed and travels to face third-seeded Tea Area in a 6 p.m. game.

The winners of today’s game will advance to the semifinals, which are slated to be held Saturday.
