Boys’ 281 Conference Tournament opens play

Play began Saturday in the boys’ portion of the 281 Conference Tournament, at sites around the Heartland region.

Top seeds hosted first round games and higher seeds will host championship and consolation round games, which will take place Tuesday night.

Wolsey-Wessington 67, Lower Brule 59

WOLSEY — The Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds survived a hard-fought and often-emotional game on Saturday in Wolsey, defeating Lower Brule 67-59 in the opening round of the 281 Conference tournament.

The Warbirds fell behind early and trailed at half 29-25, but clawed back into the game, pulling ahead 48-42 after three quarters before closing out the victory.

Wolsey-Wessington was led in scoring by Corbin Haarmeyer with 24 points, including four 3-pointers and six key free throws in the fourth quarter. Tristan Abbott added 17 points and Payson Gohn 11 for the Warbirds, now 7-1 on the season.

Lower Brule, who started the season 5-0, drops its fourth straight game to fall to 5-4.

Brian LaRoche Jr, and Gavin Thigh carried the bulk of the scoring, with 24 points apiece for the Sioux.

Wolsey-Wessington will square off with James Valley Christian in the second round of the 281 tournament in Wolsey Tuesday evening.

Highmore-Harrold 67, Iroquois/Doland 27

HIGHMORE — The Highmore-Harrold Pirates moved into the championship round of the 281 Conference boys’ basketball tournament Saturday night, with a resounding 67-27 win over the Iroquois-Doland Chiefs.

Remington Paynter scored 15 points and Peyton McDonnel chipped in 10 as a total of 10 Pirates got into the scorebook in the game. Owen Fritzsche led all rebounders with eight boards.

For the Chiefs, Cole Nelson led all scorers with 17 points in the contest.

Tobias Arbeiter added eight and also had six boards for the Chiefs in the game.

The Pirates host Wessington Springs Tuesday night while Iroquois/Doland will be on the road at Hitchcock/Tulare also on Tuesday night.

JVC 39, SC/W 30

WOONSOCKET —The James Valley Christian Vikings earned the fifth seed in the 281 Conference tournament through seeding points, but they showed that they deserved the seed as they scored the only first round “upset”, defeating the fourth-seed Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks in Woonsocket Saturday, 39-30.

Landon Wager led the Vikings with 20 points as the Vikings earned their first victory of the season, moving to 1-8 on the year. Brennen Hood led JVC with 11 rebounds.

Tryce Slykhuis, Hayden Beigh, and Brady Larson each scored nine points to lead the Blackhawks, who fell to 3-6 on the season. Larson led the team with eight rebounds.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday in the second round of the tourney, with the Vikings traveling to Wolsey to face Wolsey-Wessington and the Blackhawks hosting Sunshine Bible Academy in Forestburg.

Wessington Springs 60, Hitchcock-Tulare 55 OT

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — The third-seeded Wessington Springs Spartans found themselves in a dog fight Saturday night, in the opening round of the 281 Conference boys’ basketball tournament, but managed to eke out a 60-55, overtime victory over the Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots.

The Spartans, who improve to 5-3 with the win, held a 24-21 lead at the half, but saw the Patriots catch up and take a 37-32 lead after three quarters. Only a strong fourth quarter allowed Wessington Springs to force the overtime period and pull out the win.

Mason Schelske scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds - both game-high totals - for the double-double to lead the Spartans. Cooper Hainy added 11 points and Blake Larson chipped in 10 to the winning effort.

Jack Boomsma led the Patriots, who remain winless at 0-7, with 17 points, while Kyle Hamilton had five rebounds for Hitchcock-Tulare.

The Patriots had two more field goals than did the Spartans, but Wessington Springs hit 17 of its 23 free throws, while Hitchcock-Tulare only converted eight of 21 attempts in the game.

Wessington Springs travels to Highmore-Harrold Tuesday night in a championship semifinal matchup, while sixth-seeded Hitchcock-Tulare will host Iroquois-Doland in the consolation round, also Tuesday night.
