HURON — The Huron Tiger wrestlers closed the 2018 portion of their schedule Thursday night, taking on a young and hungry Brandon Valley Lynx team. The Tigers came out on the short end of a 40-24 decision to the Lynx.
“Our kids are out there fighting every match,” said Huron coach Dan McCarty. “We aren’t winning as many matches or duals as I would like but I love the way we go out and compete hard every match. We made some upper weight mistakes tonight that probably cost us a bit. We’re so young at the lighter weights that we really need our seniors to come through for us.”
Huron got a pair of forfeit wins and gave up one weight by forfeit in the match.
Gabe Rieger dominated Adrien Bain in the 182-pound match, getting a takedown in the first 15 seconds of the match, and quickly tilting the Lynx grappler for back points. Bain got a little breathing room when Rieger re-adjusted his hold, but the re-adjustment paid off, as Rieger immediately rolled the Brandon Valley wrestler over and earned the 1:07 win by pin.
“Gabe really came out and took care of business tonight,” McCarty said. “He’s got his confidence, he’s a senior and he is going out there to dominate his matches.”
It turned out to be the only win by fall for the Tigers in the dual, as Huron’s other two wins - by Daynon Huber at 145 and Tyson Lien at 152 came via decision.
Huber never trailed in the match, as he took the down position after a scoreless first period and immediately escaped for a 1-0 lead. The Tiger senior immediately went into action, however, taking down Brandon’s Tate Johnson for the 3-0 lead. An Johnson escape that Huber allowed, and a second one in the third period were the only other points to be scored as Huber earned the win.
“This is the best I have seen Daynon wrestle since he was at the state meet as a sophomore,” McCarty said. “He needed a win to place there and he got it. Tonight I saw that same enthusiasm from Daynon and he was fun to watch in his match.”
While Huber never trailed, Lien’s only lead came in the closing seconds of his match.
Brandon’s Jack Smith got a takedown early, and ended the period nursing the 2-0 lead. He took the down position to start the second period and got a quick escape for a 3-0 lead, but Lien burrowed in and got a takedown in the last 20 seconds of the frame and trailed 3-2 headed to the final period.
Lien started down and Smith seemed content to just ride for the win, but Lien had different ideas. The lanky sophomore managed an escape with just over a minute remaining and immediately went on the hunt. Both wrestlers came close to getting the important takedown as the clock ticked toward zero, but it was Lien who executed the move for the score with 12 seconds left in the match, and held on for the 5-3 win.
“Tyson showed what he is capable of tonight,” McCarty said. “He struggled at the lighter weights the last couple of years, but has adapted pretty well to wrestling in the middle of the lineup. He looked pretty comfortable tonight.”
