HURON — The athletic directors from member schools of the Eastern South Dakota Conference voted unanimously during a meeting Wednesday to present Huron boys’ basketball coach Tim Buddenhagen with the ESD Award of Merit. He will receive the honor during the ESD Track and Field Meet on May 12 in Pierre.
“Coach Buddenhagen’s longevity leading the Tigers in multiple sports and his overall accomplishments made his nomination and easy decision by the ESD Athletic Directors,” Huron AD Terry Rotert said.
Buddenhagen has taught and coached in the Huron School District for 31 years. He has served as the varsity boys’ basketball coach since 2001.

Buddenhagen also served as a head coach for the Tigers in football from 2007-2009 and girls’ basketball from 1988-2001. He has been an assistant track coach since 2009 and was an assistant cross country coach from 2002-2007.
Buddenhagen guided Huron to Class AA state basketball titles in 1989 with the girls’ team and in 2004 with the boys’ team. Under his direction, the Tigers won ESD Conference titles in 1990 and 1999 in girls’ basketball and 2004, 2009, 2010 and 2016 in boys’ basketball.
Buddenhagen was named the South Dakota Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year in 2004 and was named the Region 3 Coach of the year six times (2004, 2008, 2009 and 2016 for boys; 1997 and 1998 for girls).
Additionally, Buddenhagen was named the boys’ basketball Assistant Coach of the Year for Region 3 in 1998 and 1999; and the track Assistant Coach of the Year for Area 3 in 2010.
Joining Buddenhagen on his journey have been his wife, Shelly, and their three children, Jordan, TyAnn and Tenley.
