Building a tennis foundation

HURON — The Huron Tennis Association volunteers have been hosting a junior tennis league for over ten years now, and the final night of this year’s league took place on Wednesday evening at the Winter Park tennis courts. Throughout June and July, anywhere from 20-35 tennis players between the ages of first- to seventh-grade have been embracing the use of the outdoor tennis courts each Wednesday night. The league was originally started by Mike Knigge, previous boys’ tennis coach until Co-ordinator Sarah Rubish began running it for the previous three years.
“I got involved because my kids played tennis here when Mike started it years ago, I help co-ordinate while the two coaches who play in the high school varsity teams, Audrey Rubish and Brenden Schalder, run most of the action. Tennis is such a nice sport for kids who don’t have the time to spend playing and training every day, and it is a fairly inexpensive sport so a wider range of kids can get involved,” Rubish explained. “Unless one plays tennis, has kids in tennis or happens to drive down Kansas Avenue often, one would never know how much use the courts get. It’s a beautiful park where the kids have fun, enjoy themselves and learn about tennis.”
