Call him Major General Place

HURON – He is now a two-star general.
Two years after his parents and other family members watched as he rose in rank from colonel to brigadier general in the Army, Dr. Ron Place, a Huron native, has been promoted to major general.
In the ceremony, at the Pentagon where he works every day, he once again fulfilled the tradition of renewing the oath of office and citing a continuing fidelity to the Constitution. His parents, Bob and Carol Place of Huron, were again in attendance.
When he was promoted to brigadier general, Place was the assistant surgeon general.
His assignment has now changed. He is a special assistant to the surgeon general, and works with the assistant secretary of defense for health affairs.
For the past 10 months, Place has been managing the transition required by the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act.

He said almost every year something changes about military medicine. Military leaders wanted a live officer of his rank to manage the transition, he said.
Place is a 1982 graduate of Huron High School. He went on to earn a chemistry degree at the University of South Dakota. In 1986, he was commissioned a second lieutenant after having entered the military through the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.
He attended medical school at Creighton University and was promoted to captain on graduation. He completed his general surgery internship and residency training at Madigan Army Medical Center.
Place was a staff general surgeon at Fort Benning, Ga., where he became chief of the Ostomy and Wounded Care Clinic.
He continued to be promoted as he served in various capacities, including a stint in Afghanistan.
Throughout his career, Place has credited the mentorship he has received from excellent leaders and teams for his success.
Place also points to his parents for his achievements.
