Carey L. Dorn of Clear Lake

CLEAR LAKE — Carey L. Dorn was born March 17, 1951, the 5th of nine children in Hendricks, Minn., to Vernon Gail and Lola Elaine (Brown) Dorn. He always said he was the biggest, oneriest Leprechaun you’d ever meet, and boy was he fun loving!

He always said he was the “black sheep of the family” and maybe so, but in an honorable, good way. He was fun loving, adventurous, daring, mischievous, unpredictable, and loving. Some of his siblings might have thought he exaggerated, but not so, our first date was on his motorcycle.

He wanted to get married at the Sturgis Bike Rally. He wanted to live in the Colorado mountains with a dirt floor, no electricity and no running water. In 1972, that was extreme. We moved to remote Alaska where we had to “take our own home” because there was no housing and the newspaper was published twice a month, if necessary. He worked the gold field (after retiring from his Railroad career of almost 30 years) with his good friend, Will Godbey. There he, Will and I had numerous encounters with bears & possums!

I’ve missed Carey not sitting next to me in church these last 2 years. He never knew if his physical body would fail him, but golly his singing voice was amazing!

Here’s what our sons feel about their father: He was an amazing loving father, loved by us and adored by his four granddaughters. Speaking for my six. Taught me how to be a strong loving Dad. Loved by his daughter-in-law, that we are not saying goodbye, but we will see you in Heaven.

Carey is survived by his wife of 50 years, Darla J. (Rost) Dorn; two sons: Evern Dawin ( Nicole) Huron, and Emmanuel Lynn (Genee`) Pensacola, Fla.; eight grandchildren: Skye Leigh, Dylan and Hunter, Kate Elizabeth, Laycee Marie, Adalynn Ann, Gabriella Marie, Katherine Grace, Thalia Hope, soon to be Sophia and three special young ones, Aden, Reegan and Libby; two sisters: Sharen Osowski and Lynette Stammmire of Calif.; one brother, Shawn Dorn of Ore.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
The artist Carey was, the handyman, the thoughtful & giving man, my loving husband. I lost a gem, but Heaven gained a jewel.

Carey was preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Elaine; two brothers, Gerry and Larry Dorn; two sisters, Wanda Dorn and Roxie Suydam; Darla’s parents, Dwain and Marie Rost (Eller) and Ron Eller, Tina Cain and Dustin Dorn.

A Celebration of Carey’s life will be held later in the year.

Arrangements are entrusted with the Houseman Funeral Home of Clear Lake.
