Champions crowned at WISSOTA 100

HURON — Chad Becker of Aberdeen added to his already magnificant season with a victory in the 40-lap late model feature race on Saturday during the 2017 Speedway Motors WISSOTA 100 at Dakota State Fair Speedway.
Becker, who started in the middle of the three-wide front row in the 33-car field, took the lead on the opening lap and kept the hammer down. He built nearly a half-lap lead over the runner-up in the 40-lap race, which went caution free.
“It was fun and the car drove beautifully,” Becker said.
Ricky Weiss of Headingley, Manitoba, who ran third for much of the late model feature, slipped past Jeff Provinzino of Hibbing, Minn., on the final lap to claim the second spot. Provinzino was third, followed by Lance Matthees of Winona, Minn., and Kent Arment of Aberdeen.
While it was Tim Johnson of Brainerd, Minn., who won the super stock feature race, Dave Mass of East Bethel, Minn., put on quite a driving exhibition for the fans.
After winning the qualifying features on Wednesday and Thursday night, Mass elected to give up his starting spots on the front row for a chance to run for more national points on Friday. However, a flat tire in the qualifying feature on Friday, sent him into the last-chance qualifier on Saturday.
Mass won the last-chance qualifier to secure his spot in the 33-car field for the feature race, but he would start in the 25th spot. He worked his way through the field during the 30-lap event for a third-place finish.
Johnson held off Cory Tammen of Moorhead, Minn., for the victory.
“The track was great, I just put the hammer down,” Johnson said. “But, it slicked up at the end, so we had to move around a little bit.”
Cole Searing of Huron was fourth, followed by Kevin Burdick of Proctor, Minn.
Capitalizing on a late restart, Matt Gilbertson of Montevideo, Minn. secured the victory in the modified feature race.
Kevin Adams of Cameron, Wis., used a restart on lap six to take the lead from Tim Johnson and led the next 22 laps of the 30-lap feature race before a caution regrouped the field for a green-white-checkered finish. Gilbertson moved to the front of the field on the restart and stayed there for the final two laps to secure the win.
“You just done beat “Buzzy” (Kevin Adams) here,” Gilbertson said after the race. “I was able to pass guys on the top and the bottom.”
Adams was second, followed by Zach Johnson of Kensington, Minn., Arment and Dave Cain of Corcoran, Minn.
Randy Klein of Lisbon, N.D., led from start to finish to win the 25-lap Midwest modified feature race.  He was hounded by Shane Halopka of Greenwood, Wis., through the duration of the event.
“This thing has been awesome all weekend,” Klein said of his car.
The 25-lap feature event included four cautions and Klein considered himself fortunate to be able to hold on to the top spot on each of those occasions.
“I’ve never been very good on restarts,” he said. “When those guys showed me their nose I knew I had to pick up the pace a bit.”
Halopka would finish second, followed by Corey Storck of Morris, Minn., Mike Jans of Clarkfield, Minn., and Scott Harrington of Waubay.
Jordan Tollakson of Montevideo, Minn., earned a second straight WISSOTA 100 title on Saturday in the street stock division.
“My car always seems to be good here,” Tollakson said.

After starting on the middle of the front row in the 33-car field, Tollakson was able to steal the lead from  Justin Tammen of Clara City, Minn., using the high groove on lap 19 of the 25-lap feature race.
Tammen would finish second, followed by Tim Johnson, Jans and Jim Gullikson of Zimmerman, Minn.
Tyler Larson of Kandiyohi, Minn., led from start to finish to win the 20-lap mod four feature race on Saturday.
Larson led the first four laps before the race was halted when the car of  Tom Manning of Gillette, Wyo., rolled into the catch fence as it prepared to enter turn one. Following a delay to fix the catch fence, the race resumed and Larson led the rest of the way for the victory.
“What a track,” Larson said. My car couldn’t have been any better.”
Larson also had the opportunity to celebrate the win with his father, Dean, of Pennock, Minn., who earned a spot on the podium by finishing third.
Tever Roediger of Big Lake, Minn., separated the father-son duo with a runner-up finish. Clint Jensen of Midland was fourth, followed by Jerry Ester of Motley, Minn.
