HURON — Christina L. Bixler, 93, of Huron and formerly of Hitchcock, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at Avantara – Redfield.


Her funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church at Hitchcock. Burial will be in the Altoona Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.


Christina Lee Howland-Bixler was born on August 6, 1926, to Albert Lee and Nettie Christina Moser-Howland in Omaha, Nebraska. Christina graduated from Roscoe, South Dakota, as high school valedictorian of her class and continued her education at Northern State College earning a teacher’s certificate.

She met Trevor Bixler while teaching intermediate grade school in Hitchcock. They married on June 3, 1948, in Lake Andes. They farmed in the Hitchcock area until their retirement in 1995, they then moved to Huron.


Christina and Trevor had five children, Greg (Roxan), Barbara Grant, Bradley (Debra), Walter (Lynn), and Reed (Terri); ten grandchildren, Zane (Lyza), Jacob (Jessie), Rebecca (Scott), Chandler (Dana), Skylar (Erica), Walter (Eryn), Dakota (Aaron), Gus, Jill (Nathan), and David (Megan); and 20 great-grandchildren, Bennett, Ryan, Chase, Hailey, Tanner, Colton, Asher, Lincoln, Jaelynn, Jacksan, Raena, Jase, Gracyn, Tess, David, Brady, Griffin, Trava, Sylvie, and Aurora.


She is also survived by one sister, Ruth Scheid; and one sister-in-law, LaJean Howland.
Christina was a gardener at heart, raising vegetables to feed her family and many flowers. She provided the pulpit flowers for the United Methodist Church in Hitchcock for many years. She also was a great cook. Caring for her family and church were very important to Christina. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years and held local and state offices representing the United Methodist Churches of Hitchcock and Huron.


Christina Lee Howland-Bixler is at peace with her Savior.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Trevor; her parents, Albert and Nettie Howland; two brothers, Dean Howland and Duane Howland; one sister, Joan Kuehn; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Harold and Thelma Harms, Jens and Shirley Jensen, Paul Scheid, and Vernon Kuehn; one grandson, Travis Bixler; one son-in-law, Newell Grant.


Memorials may be directed to the Altoona Cemetery in Hitchcock.


Her arrangements have been entrusted with the Kuhler Funeral Home.
