HURON — The Huron City Commission approved two purchases for the street department Monday night that will aid in snow removal this winter.

City engineer Brett Runge presented the items to the commission. The first was a 24-foot tilt deck trailer to move the skid steer around the town. Premier Equipment won the bid at $11,500, and commissioners approved the purchase.

The second item was the purchase of a new motor grader priced at $307,063.20 through Sourcewell bid from Butler Machinery. Runge explained that the existing grader that is being replaced is going to be moved to the airport, and the grader currently at the airport will be surplussed.

Runge also presented a payment request for Lot Pros LLC for crack sealing done throughout town for $35,000. This was approved.

Finance director Paullyn Carey presented the 2022 pay schedule with 4% cost of living and step increases for city employees. This was approved.

Two Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) were discussed with the commission by city attorney Tucker Volesky. The MOUs added Juneteenth to the holiday schedule for AFSCME Local 169 and for Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3A in their respective contracts. The commission approved both MOUs and authorized the mayor to sign both.

Commissioners also:
• Approved a special event on-sale alcoholic beverage license filed by Top Floor Events for a Chamber Mixer on Jan. 11 at Dakotaland’s administrative office, 2297 Kansas Ave. S.E.

• Approved renewal of the airport liability insurance with American Trust Insurance.
• Approved a raffle for Huron MS Society for multiple dates at Red Arrow Bar.

Mayor Gary Harrington announced that a special meeting will be held by the city commission at noon on Thursday, Dec. 30. He also announced that city offices will be closed Friday, Dec. 31 for the New Year holiday.

Commissioner Rich Bragg read the statement from the Solid Waste Department indicating that the department will be closed Friday and Saturday, with Friday’s garbage and recycling routes running on Wednesday.
