City renews Retail Strategies contract

HURON — City commissioners have authorized the expenditure of about $13,300 for the city’s share of a $40,000 annual contract with Retail Strategies, a company working with the city and Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau to recruit businesses to town.
It is the second year of a three-year contract that is renewed each year.
Mayor Paul Aylward said Retail Strategies has made many business contacts, but has not had success up to now in attracting new retail stores to Huron. However, he said doing so is a long process and the decision was made to renew the contract for another year.
Meanwhile, commissioners approved the purchase of a solid waste container truck off of a Sourcewell contract from Sanitation Products of Sioux Falls for $243,668.
The truck will be used for commercial collection accounts.

Delivery of the 2020-model truck will come in nine months or later.
Also, board members approved an $831,101 progress payment to Kyburz Carlson Construction of Aberdeen for the new Public Works building under construction in the West Industrial Park.
Aylward said about $1 million is left on the contract. Completion of the project was scheduled for this week, but he said it appears it will be October before the building is finished.
Commissioners also:
• Approved a special event on-sale alcoholic beverage license filed by the State Fair for a wedding reception Saturday at the Expo Building.
• Approved requests for alcoholic beverage consumption in a public area filed by Karen Sandate for a birthday party on Sept. 29 at the Nordby Exhibit Hall and by the Huron Public Library for a murder mystery dinner on Nov. 2 at the library.
• Approved the regular status of Rob Harder in the park maintenance department on completion of his probation.
• Set. Oct. 15 as the public hearing date to consider a request for alley vacation filed by Pentex Restaurant Group and Deann Lovett next to Taco John’s.
