BROOKINGS — Cleo A. Lockwood, 86, of Brookings, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2017, at the Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 26, at First United Methodist Church in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Rude’s Funeral Home.
Cleo Avis Starr was born January 29, 1931, the daughter of Ralph and Erma (Mullenberg) Starr on a farm near Doland. She lived on the family farm for several years. She attended country school through the eighth grade. The family moved to Doland where she graduated from Doland High School in 1949. She married Don Lockwood January 7, 1951. Cleo worked at a bank in Doland. She spent four years living in San Diego while Don was serving in the Navy. While in San Diego, she worked at an accounting office. They moved to Brookings in 1955, where the couple has made their home since. She worked at South Dakota State University for 31 years as a secretary.
Cleo was a member of an Extension Club, PEO-chapter BA, Brookings Hospital Auxiliary, and belonged to several Bridge clubs. Her hobbies were crocheting, crafts, playing bridge, attending sporting events and visiting with family and friends. She enjoyed going to SDSU football games, and the men and women basketball games. She was especially proud when her family was chosen as the SDSU Family of the Year in 1992. Cleo was also a fan of the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Don of Brookings; four children, Marvin (Laurie) Lockwood of Yankton, Mike Lockwood of Fargo, N.D., Kathy (Brian) Peterson of Brookings, and Pat (Becky) Lockwood of Brookings; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; her twin sister, Carol (Dana) Houghtaling of Doland; brother, Don (Shirley) Starr of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a special cousin, Marilyn Mayer; sister-in-law, Marian Starr; special neighbor friend, Gwen Anderson; and all of the wonderful ladies from the organizations and clubs she belonged to.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Daryle; and her sister and brother-in-law, Beula and Don Rehorst.
