Corsica-Stickney finishes third in Class B state tourney

HURON — With three players in double figures, third-seeded Corsica-Stickney used a 55-45 victory against Freeman to finish third in the Class B State Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Saturday at Huron Arena.
The Jaguars held a 25-24 lead at the half and made their push for the victory by outscoring fifth-seeded Freeman 17-8 in the third quarter.
Corsica-Stickney was able to do their damage with its post players in the openning minutes of the second half, as 5-foot-10 eighth-grader, Avery Broughton drew a pair of conventional 3-point play opportunities and teammate Rachel Gerlach, who is a 5-10 freshman also converted on a conventional 3-point play.
Broughton was successful on her second opportunity to cap a 9-0 run the Jaguars used to take a 33-24 advantage to start the third quarter.
Corsica-Stickney led by as many as 13 points in the stanza, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Hannah Eberts sliced the Flyers’ deficit nearly in half at 39-32.
After leading 42-32 heading into the final quarter, the Jaguars used six straight points from Broughton to build its biggest lead of the game at 48-33.
Broughton would finish with a game-high 21 points for Corsica-Stickney, which ended the season at 23-3. Courtney Menning had 12 points, while Gerlach and Raven Barse finished with 11 and eight points, respectively.
Broughton also had a team-high eight rebounds for the Jaguars, while Menning recorded three steals.
Ebberts was the lone player to reach double figures for Freeman with 17 points. Emily Miller had nine points, while Jaimie Glanzer and Daynon Roth had seven and six points, respectively.
Eberts also led the Flyers, who finished the season at 20-6, with six rebounds.
