County land auction leaves some property unsold

HURON — Bidders purchased a dozen properties in Huron, Virgil and Wolsey in a county land sale on Tuesday, but eight other lots in the Estabrook Subdivision in Huron went unsold.
Returning the bare Estabrook lots to the property tax rolls could be more of a challenge because of special assessments for new curb and gutter work that run as high as $20,000 a lot.
As he began the auction, Commissioner Larry Mattke said it has seemed like Beadle County has been having land sales more often recently because of nonpayment of taxes.
In any case, there was competitive bidding on the few Huron lots that have structures on them.
All of the bidding began at either $50 or $100.
Following are the properties in Huron that sold and the prevailing bid:

• 685 Wisconsin Ave. N.W., $900.
• 541 Frank Ave. S.E., $2,000.
• 537 Seventh St. S.W., $1,000.
• 155 Commercial Road, $200.
• 565 Frank Ave. S.E., $250.
• 404 Utah Ave. S.E., $200.
• 844 Arizona Ave. S.W., $100.
• 447 Ohio Ave. S.W., $100.
• 549 Frank Ave. S.E., $100.
Properties in Virgil sold for $500 and $400, and a property in Wolsey sold for $850.
