Cyclones win playoff opener in Region 2A

WILLOW LAKE — Eighth-seeded Clark/Willow Lake extended its season with a 3-1 victory against ninth-seeded Deuel in the Region 2A Tournament play-in match on Monday.

The Cyclones built at 2-0 lead in the match with set wins of 25-22 and 27.25. Deuel staved off elimination with a 25-22 win in the third set, but the rally was thwarted with a 15-20 win by Clark/Willow Lake in the fourth set.

Sara Thonvold led the Cyclones with seven kills on 33 of 37 attacks. Haylee Tormanen added six kills on 25 of 29 spiking.

Thonvold was also perfect on 24 serves with an ace, while Tehya Vig converted on 19 of 21 serves.

Sami Brenden was 92 of 92 setting with 13 assists for Clark/Willow Lake, while Zoe Nichols was 87 of 88 with 11 assists. Avery Lee and Vig finished with 30 and 21 digs, respectively, while Tormanen had eight blocks and Shay Michalskie recorded six blocks.

Clark/Willow Lake, which improved to 11-14, will travel to face top-seeded Hamlin (19-6) in the quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m., today.

Deuel ends the season at 7-17.
