Dakota Oyate Challenge 2023 begins

Lower Brule 113, Takini 43
HURON — The Lower Brule Sioux, ranked fourth in the latest S.D. High School Class “B” rankings, had no problem with the Takini Skyhawks in the Dakota Oyate Challenge Thursday morning, racing to a 113-43 win at Huron Arena.

Gavin Thigh had 34 points to lead the Sioux, who also got 20 points off the bench from Tate Elk Soldier. Brian LaRoche, Jr., scored 19 and Haepi Elk Soldier chipped in 11.

Redick Curley led the Skyhawks with 16 points, while Logan Quilt netted 11.

Crazy Horse 78, Wakpala 67
The Crazy Horse Chiefs raced to a comfortable 19-point halftime lead, then had to hold on in the second half to defeat the Wakpala Sioux 78-67, in an opening round game in the boys’ division of the Dakota Oyate Challenge at Huron Arena.

Noah Iron Horse led a balance Chiefs’ attack with 16 points in the game, while Hyden Martin and Larry Romero, Jr., came off the Crazy Horse bench to score 12 and 11 points, respectively, and Trey Lamont netted 11 points as well, as the Chiefs improve to 9-3 with the win.

Wakpala, which falls to 4-8 with the loss, was led by Ashtyn Kills Small and Zachary Moran, each with 19 points, while Lane Cadotte chipped in 11 for the Sioux.

Omaha Nation 87, Flandreau Indian School 55
HURON — The Omaha Nation Chiefs jumped out quickly and coasted to an 87-55 win over the Flandreau Indian School Indians in the boys’ bracket of the Dakota Oyate Challenge at Huron Arena Thursday afternoon.

Keigan Parker scored 24 points to lead the Chiefs, while Keithin Miller added 19 and Avander Parker-Galvin came off the bench to net 11, as Omaha Nation converted 11 three point field goals.

L’trell Brother Of All scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Indians in the scorebook, while teammates Malik Longie and Lavelle Fights Over each chipped in 10 points.

Omaha Nation moves to the championship semifinals where the Chiefs will face Crazy Horse, while FIS will take on Wakpala in the consolation round.

Marty 84, Tiospaye Topa 59
The Marty Braves got 23 points from Benicio Zephier to lead five scorers in double figures to defeat the Tiospay Topa Thunderhawks 84-59 Thursday in opening round action of the Dakota Oyate Challenge at Huron Arena.

The Braves also got 16 points from Julius Brugular. Greg Zephier added 15 points, Kizer Ashes chipped in 12 points, and Terrill Rave put in 11 points for Marty, who moves to 5-4.

The Thunderhawks fall to 7-3 despite a game-high 27 points from Kristapher Meeter. Jorge Hawk added 13 points.

Marty will play Lower Brule at 6 p.m. Friday while Tiospaye Topa will tip off with Takini at 10:30 a.m.

Omaha Nation 72, Takini 34
The Omaha Nation Lady Chiefs soared past the Takini Lady Skyhawks 72-34 in the opening game of the girls’ bracket at the Dakota Oyate Challenge Thursday at Huron Arena.

The Lady Chiefs cruised to a 45-16 lead at the break.

Tylisha McCauley led Omaha Nation with 14 points, while both Latecia Contreras and Sylvia Valentino netted 11.

Halo Waloke led Takini with 14 points, with Aneisha Hayes chipping in nine.

Lower Brule 81, Crazy Horse 9
The Lower Brule Lady Sioux cruised to an 81-9 opening round win over the Crazy Horse Lady Chiefs at the Dakota Oyate Challenge Thursday.

Lael Middletent scored 24 points and Brilyn LaRoche added 16 to lead the Lady Sioux to the win and a berth in tonight’s championship semifinal.

Tonia Yellow Elk led the Lady Chiefs with five points in the contest.

HURON — The Wakpala Lady Sioux raced to a huge 29-point halftime cushion, then watched the Tiospaye Tope Thunderhawks close the margin in the second half, as the Lady Sioux held on for a 67-50 win in the opening round of the girls’ Dakota Oyate Challenge at Huron Arena.

Tylene Hawk Bear laced the nets for 26 points for Wakpala, while Kadence Transgrud added 17 and Tyrianna Hawk Bear netted 16 in the contest.

Leilani Bowker topped the scoring columns for the Thunderhawks with 17 points, while teammates K’luana Buffalo and Kaylynn Holy Bear scored 16 and 10, respectively.

Wakpala, now 7-7, will face the Lower Brule Lady Sioux in the championship semifinals tonight, while the Thunderhawks fall into the consolation round, where they will face Crazy Horse this morning.

Marty 52, Flandreau Indian School 27
The Marty Lady Braves used a 31-11 second half to secure a 52-27 victory over the Flandreau Indian School Lady Indians Thursday at Huron Arena in opening round action at the Dakota Oyate Challenge.

Hawk Bair dropped in 20 points for the Lady Braves as Marty moves to 2-7. Rozario Zephier added 10 points.

The Lady Indians fell to 0-6. Niyah Sierra led Flandreau Indian School with 10 points.

Marty will play Omaha Nation Friday at 3 p.m. while Flandreau Indian School will battle Takini in the first game of the day at 9 a.m. Friday.
