HURON — Darwin Peterson, 75, of Huron, passed away Sunday, June 26, 2022, at Huron Regional Medical Center.


His memorial service will be held at 1 p.m on Thursday at American Lutheran Church.

A private burial will be held at Sterling Cemetery near Bruce, at a later date.


Visitation, with his family present will be from 4 to 6 p.m., on Wednesday, June 29, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron. Darwin’s family encourages motorcycles at his visitation and service.


Darwin Wendell Peterson was born on May 8, 1947, to parents Wendell A. and Lois B. (Pederson) Peterson in Brookings County. He graduated from Brookings High School in 1965. He attended Watertown Vo-Tech for business machine and office repair.

Darwin moved to Huron to manage a gas station, and he was then offered a position at Huron Office Supply. After many years, Darwin opened his own business, Office Equipment Service, which he faithfully ran for the last 30-plus years.


Darwin married JoAnne Labor in Huron on June 6, 1973. Darwin was a man of many hobbies. He loved to go motorcycling, attending Sturgis almost every year since 1972. He enjoyed quick-draw, jet-skiing, and horses. He was a collector of knives, guns, and watches. He was a member of American Lutheran Church.


He is survived by his wife, JoAnne of Huron; his children, Philip Peterson of Huron, Ashley Peterson of Sioux Falls, Brett (Laura) Burt of Austin, Texas, and Shane Burt of New Braunfels, Texas; three grandchildren, Kennedy Pudwill, Brendan Burt and Aidan Burt; siblings, Dennis (Wendy) Peterson of Bruce and Janice (Tom) Fergen of Brookings; sisters-in-law, Barb (Dave) Templeton and Cheryl (Gene) Ludens; brother-in-law, Gene (Bev) Labor; and several nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; brother-in-law Larry (Janice) Hancock.
