CASTLEWOOD — Baylor Beck covered the 5,000-meter course in 18:08.89 to finish second in the varsity boys’ race for De Smet during the Castlewood Invite on Saturday.
The Bulldogs were second in the boys’ final standings behind only Elkton-Lake Benton, which won the event with 16 points. De Smet was second at 20, followed by Deubrook Area at 26, Deuel at 29, Estelline at 39 and Castlewood at 54.
Miles Harming of Elkton-Lake Benton was the top runner in the varsity boys’ race with a time of 17:41.01. Riley Benning of Estelline was third behind Beck at 18:22.11, while Riley Hunter of Elkton-Lake Benton was fourth at 18:43.08 and Mason Ramlo of Deubrook Area was fifth at 18:51.72.
De Smet had three other runners in the top 15. Andy Close was eighth at 18:55.10, Logan Millman was 10th at 18:58.59 and Noah Roth was 13th at 19:10.50.
With four of the top five runners in the varsity girls’ race, Deubrook Area won the team title with just nine points.
Deuel was second at 20, followed by De Smet at 25 and Estelline at 45.
Kenzie Hamann of Deuel earned the medalist honors in the varsity girls’ race with a time of 18:49.78. Deubrook Area had runners in the next four spots. Andrea Vandermeer was second at 19:33.76.
Emily Martens was seventh for De Smet at 22:13, while Carly Wiese was ninth at 23:05.66. Rounding out the lineup for the Lady Bulldogs were Raegan Burke and Callie Martens in spots No. 12 and 13, respectively, with times of 23:52.18 and 24:30.42.
