Despite pandemic, the need remains

HURON — Donating blood during the COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for the American Red Cross. That’s part of the reason that the organizer of Thursday’s donation stop was happy with the response.

“The community has really stepped up, and we are pleased with the response of volunteers under the current condition,” said Charlotte Henley, a 16-year blood drive organizer.

During the stop at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, volunteers took  every precaution necessary to ensure safety precautions and social distancing practices are being observed.

“We used to hold our blood drives at North Western Energy and Brenda Welch was the coordinator,” Henley said. “Brenda is a huge supporter and volunteer, who has always been ready to help. She is very committed and helps make this a huge success.”

Henley noted that nearly everyone who reserved a spot at Thursday’s blood drive came to donate.”

“Most are regular blood donors,” said Henley, adding that the American Red Cross was not taking walk ins. The next stop for the American Red Cross blood drive is in De Smet.
