Clyde “Chub” Dillman is being inducted for 50 years of his contributions as a bus driver to the Huron students and athletes. Clyde has received honors from the State of South Dakota, City of Huron, and the Huron Public Schools for his taking such good care of students and athletes as he drove them to school and activity trips all over the State of South Dakota and the United States.

Clyde is a US Marine veteran and served in Japan during the Korean War. He married Rexanna Barnes and they bought a farm south of Huron in 1967. He began driving bus for the Huron Public Schools as well as farming. 

He had his regular school route where he drove students to and from school averaging 80-125 miles per day.  

He then would drive the activity buses for out of town athletic events. He has logged almost one million miles during his career making sure students and athletes were safe and sound. Clyde saw tears when the Huron Tigers would lose a contest, the athletes could not help but be sad. If they won, the drive home was always joyous. Many times Clyde had to be a counselor to students and even coaches on the way home.

Clyde drove all those miles and years without an accident. He received four safety awards during his driving career. In his 45th year of driving, the State Of South Dakota awarded him a special plaque for his dedication to safety and care of students. The Huron Public Schools named him Employee of the Month four times during his tenure. He was a role model for bus drivers all over South Dakota. Clyde was honored as South Dakota Bus Driver of the Year by the South Dakota Transportation Association. In November of 2016, then Huron Mayor, Paul Aylward and the City Commission, declared November 7th as Clyde “Chub” Dillman Day in Huron.

Clyde always had the love and respect of his regular student riders and the athletes he transported all those years.   The Huron School District has had wonderful bus drivers but coaches always hoped Clyde would be behind the wheel when they got on the bus to go to an out of town contest.

Clyde lost his wife of 45 years, Rexanna, in 2002.  Clyde and Rexanna had 2 daughters.  Carolyn, and her husband Dale Getscher, live in Wolsey and they have 2 children, Jenny and Jeremy.  Jody lives in Huron and is married to Lonny Oxandaburu and they have one son, Travis.

The Huron High School Wrestling program has had a rich history since the program began in the 1960’s. The program has been blessed with outstanding coaches all those years and Dan is certainly one of those great coaches. Dan was head Tiger wrestling coach for 19 years (1996-2019) which is longer than any wrestling coach in Tiger history.

Dan is a 1990 Graduate of Mayville State University and coached wrestling at Mayport High School while attending Mayville State. He is a United State Marine Corps veteran. He came to Huron in 1990 to begin his teaching and coaching career. Dan coached 6th and 8th grade football for 20 years and also coached 6th grade track for five years.

Coach McCarty was the head Middle School wrestling coach and assistant varsity wrestling coach from 1992-1996. During this time he helped coach 27 state place winners, 10 state tournament finalists with six winning state championships, and two High School All-Americans. The Tigers were State Team Wrestling Champions in 1994, second in 1993, fifth in 1995, and seventh in 1996. The Tigers were second in the ESD Conference standings in 1993 and 1994.

During Coach McCarty’s tenure as head Tiger Wrestling coach, he coached 111 state place winners. He coached 34 state finalists and 20 of those 34 would win state championships. Two Tigers were named High School All-Americans during Dan’s tenure.

He led the Tigers to ESD Conference Team Championships in 2008 and 2011. The Tigers were runner-ups in the ESD race in 2009 and 2012. The Tigers captured third place in the ESD team standings in 1999, 2004, 2010, 2013, 2016.

The Tigers were State Tournament runners-up in 2012, third in 2009 and 2013, fourth in 2008 and 2010, fifth in 2011, sixth in 2007, 2016, and 2018, and seventh in 2006.  

Coach McCarty was named Region Wrestling Coach of the Year three times (1999, 2008, 2018).   

Dan was honored in 2022 by being inducted into the South Dakota Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame.  

Dan was given the ESD Award of Merit in 2019 which is the highest honor that is given by the schools in the ESD Conference.

Dan and his wife Lisa, who was a long-time elementary teacher in the Huron Public Schools, have two children.  Son, Pat, lives in Miller. He is married to Dana. They have a son, Walker who is 1 ½. Daughter, Kelly, teaches and coaches in the Watertown school district. Both Pat and Kelly were former HHS athletes.
      
Also being inducted during a ceremony at 5 p.m. Saturday at Huron Arena will be former athletes Kim Puterbaugh Herrmann and the late Josh Trandall, along with  the 1973 boys’ basketball team.
