Duffy edges Searing for super stock win at DSFS

HURON — Little did Cole Searing of Huron know when he borrowed a drive shaft to Kelly Duffy of Winner that Duffy would use it to edge him at the finish line for the victory in the WISSOTA super stock main event on Saturday at Dakota State Fair Speedway.
After starting on the inside of the second row, Searing swiped the lead from Chris Walker of Spearfish, who started the 15-lap feature race one spot in front of him, on the third lap.
Searing was able to build a comfortable lead, but the pace was slowed just past the midway point of the race, when Corey Elward of Mitchell, who was running in the top five, lost an engine.
With the field regrouped for the start of the final seven laps of the race, Duffy, who started eighth in the nine-car field, was able to throw everything he had at the race leader.
Duffy would use a slide job to move ahead of Searing in the second turn, but Searing would be able to move back to the point using the same move in the fourth turn.
Searing would lead six of the final seventh laps, but in the end, it was Duffy getting just enough bite out of the fourth turn to nose out the win against Searing and the finish line. It was career win No. 4 for Duffy.
Kip Myers of Ethan would claim the third spot in the super stock feature race, while Walker was fourth and Jeremy North of Huron rounded out the top five.
Elward and Searing recorded wins in the super stock heat races.
Brock Stout of Winner capitalized on a front row starting spot to secure the victory in the WISSOTA street stock feature race.
Stout powered to the lead on the opening lap and pulled away from the rest of the 12-car field before the lone caution flag of the race flew on the fifth lap.
On the restart, Blayne Baloun of St. Lawrence, who started eighth, was able to pressure Stout for the top spot.
Stout would hold off the challenge during the final eight laps to secure the victory. Baloun was second, followed by Preston Blackwell of Miller, Scott Borstad of Volga and Clifford Houser of Kimball.
Stout and Baloun inked victories in the street stock heat races.
Lorin Johnson of Miller moved closer to reaching the century mark in career feature wins at DSFS on Saturday with victory in the WISSOTA Midwest modified main event.
Johnson, who was seventh on the starting grid, moved to the front of the 19-car field on lap nine of the 15-lap feature race. Aiding his push for the lead were a trio of incidents involving three cars, which started in front of him.
Adam Brotherton of Huron snagged the lead on the opening lap from his starting spot on the outside of the front row. He led for the first eight revolutions before a spin by Jayme Peterson of Highmore, who started fourth, brought out the first of three cautions, with a spin.
On the opening lap of the ensuing restart, James Reiner of Wessington Springs, who started third, got out of shape coming out of the second turn and collected a number of cars to bring out the second yellow flag.
Johnson was able to get past Brotherton on the second restart, but would only get one more lap in before the race was halted.
Brotherton, who had rolled his car a week earlier, lost his rear wheel on the right side of his car resulting in another roll in nearly the exact same spot as he had the previous week at the top of turn three. In the earlier roll, he landed back on his wheels, where in Saturday’s he came to rest on his lid. He emerged from both injured.
Johnson, would hold off Tracy Johnson of Lake Preston during the final six laps to collect win No. 95 of his career at the Huron oval. Aaron Michel of Jamestown, N.D., was third in his first visit of the season to DSFS, followed by Brook Hess of Sioux Falls and Kyle Knouse of Huron.

Lorin Johnson, Tracy Johnson and Reiner won the Midwest modified heat races.
Chad Olsen of Hendricks, Minn., made a bid for a pair of victories on Saturday.
A victory in the WISSOTA modified feature race gave Olsen a shout at recording the double.
With some heavy hitters starting behind him, Olsen used his starting spot on the inside of the second row to his advantage. He snagged the lead from Dale Ames of Huron, who had led the first five laps, with a slide job coming out of turn four on lap six and was able to hold off Tyler McDonald of Huron for the next 10 laps to secure the win.
McDonald was second, followed by his dad, David McDonald, and brother-in-law Alex Guthmiller, both of Huron. David Carson of Huron rounded out the top five.
Olsen and Tyler McDonald won the modified heat races.
Olsen’s second opportunity for the victory came in the WISSOTA late model feature race. He started on the outside of the front row and led the 12-car field during the first 10 laps of the 20-lap main event.
The lone caution flag flew on lap 11, when the late model driven by Scott Ward of Watertown lost power.
The caution period was the break that David McDonald needed as he used the low groove in turn three on the opening lap of the restart to move to the front of the field. Chad Becker of Aberdeen would use the same spot to get past Olsen three laps later, but wouldn’t be able to catch McDonald, who earned career win No. 35 at the Huron track.
Becker was second, followed by Olsen, Gary Brown Jr. of Brandon and Jordan Heiman of Sioux Falls.
Olsen and Ward won the late model heat races.
Next up at Dakota State Fair Speedway will be the Advantage RV Mod Dirt Tour event on Saturday. The area’s top modified drivers will be joined by the WISSOTA street stocks and Midwest modifieds, starting at 7 p.m.
