Elmer B. Beckman, the son of Henry and Anna (Thielbar) Beckman, was born on August 26, 1920, on the family farm near Cavour. He attended school in Cavour and graduated from Cavour High School. Elmer took over the family farm in 1940.
Elmer was united in marriage to Vylene Hintz on January 16, 1945. Together, they farmed on his family farm where they lived for many years before moving to Huron. Elmer enjoyed the farm life and lived it to the fullest every day. He was a man of immense patience while working on the farm and this extended to working with his daughter on learning to ride her horse, helping his children on farm projects, 4-H and school activities. He was also proud of the fact that the family farm became a Century Farm in 2007. He enjoyed pheasant hunting, walleye and northern pike fishing, and farming with the Minneapolis Moline and John Deere tractors. In his younger years, Elmer played amateur baseball in Yale. Elmer and Vylene enjoyed playing cards, especially whist and pinochle with their friends.
Elmer became a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Yale and served various positions there. In his later years, he became a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron. He also served on various boards in the community as well as the Cavour School Board and the Cavour Township Board.
Grateful for having shared in Elmer’s life are his wife, Vylene of Huron; his children, Doreen (Kurt) Peterson of Lake Norden and Bruce (Janell) Beckman of Lake Preston; seven grandchildren, Pamela (Beckman) Rose, Brian (Melissa) Beckman, Corey (April) Beckman, Jennifer (Craig) Klein, Kristen (Chad) Schneekloth, Kari (Jason) Birchem, and Kimberly Strivens; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
