HURON — Emma A. Kotas, 102, of Huron, passed away on Tuesday, December 26, 2017, at SunQuest Healthcare Center.
Her memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at the Welter Funeral Home with memorial visitation one hour prior to the service. Private inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Emma was born December 4, 1915, to Henry and Anna (Fischer) Krutzfeldt on the family farm near Virgil. She was educated at the Meadow Lark School in Carlyle Township. Emma was united in marriage to Edward Kotas February 25, 1942. Edward passed away on March 1, 1992.
Emma was a helpmate on the farm with Ed. She raised chickens and had an egg business, this afforded them extra grocery money and special extra things for the household. Ed and Emma loved to dance and belonged to the dance club, Mr. & Mrs. They also enjoyed doing some traveling with friends. Emma loved to bowl and, at one time, bowled at both Fair City Lanes and the Plains. She belonged to the Friendly Neighbor Club, which met monthly at different member’s homes. They played cards, had some projects and enjoyed each other’s company.
Julie and Renae loved going to Grandma’s on “Club” day to visit with the ladies and share the special dessert. They spent countless hours next door with Grandma, playing cards, putting together puzzles, watching The Price Is Right and Golden Girls and spending the night. Emma loved having the girls over, those three had a very special relationship. Emma most always had her knitting and crochet bag next to her chair with a project in it, her hands were busy. She loved to read almost anything but especially Danielle Steel and Debbie Macomber. She enjoyed doing word search books; she said it kept her mind busy thinking.
She is survived by one son, Neil (Mona) Kotas of Huron; one daughter, Norma Ann Churma of Lakewood, Colo.; two granddaughters, Julie (Aaron) Bartekoske and Renae (Bradley) Schieckoff; three great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Hailey, and Emma Schieckhoff; several nieces, Lois Wood, Marcella Sibley, Marjorie Schiltz, Doreen Eckman, Sandy (Rick) Benson, Shelly Wheeler, Betty Krutzfeldt, and Betty Fuehrer; and two nephews, Kim Kotas and Robert Krutzfeldt.
Emma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward; three sisters, Viola Longcor, Elenora Fuehrer, and Erma Hoy; and four brothers, Herbert, Waldo, Gilbert, and Murvin in infancy.
