WOLSEY — Ervin H. Krutzfeldt, 84, of Wolsey, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at his home, after a battle with bone cancer.
His memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, June 9, at the Hope Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Inurnment with military honors will be held at the Black Hills National Cemetery at a later date.
Ervin was born July 3, 1932, to Herbert and Irene (Micheel) Krutzfeldt in Huron. He lived all his life on two farms — just two miles apart.  Growing up, Ervin was active in 4-H and FFA where he won many awards and trips. He also organized and played guitar in “The Dakota Kids” band from 1950 to 1952, they played for local dances. Ervin served in the First Division Dog Battery in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. After his service, he began his life’s vocation of farming.
In 1958, he married his best friend, Betty Romsdahl. In 1961, he was awarded the Beadle County Outstanding Young Farmer Award. Throughout his life, Ervin was active in many farm organizations and held offices in Farmers Union, NFO, the State Corn Growers Board, and the South Dakota Soybean Board. He also served as the Heartland Township Assessor for many years. He served 15 years on the Wolsey School Board while his children were in school and handed them their diplomas. Ervin was also an active member of Hershman-Gordon American Legion Post 59 of Wolsey.
Throughout his life, Ervin loved to travel.  He and Betty traveled to Germany, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Spain. Their travels also included a mission trip to Russia. Ervin traveled to many states with the “How many more miles?” motto, but he always considered Spearfish Canyon and the Black Hills as his favorites.
Ervin earned his private pilot’s license in 1980. Family trips were taken by air with two planes — one flown by Ervin and one flown by Jim and Maurine Jacobson.  Another passion was attending the S.D. State Fair; he made sure he attended every day. In later years, he volunteered as a golf cart driver and enjoyed visiting with attendees.
Serving God was very important to Ervin. He was active in the Lutheran church, and he served on several committees and held offices on the church council. He was also a charter member of Hope Lutheran Church in Huron.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; his daughters, Ann (Doug) Murano of Rapid City, and Heidi (Pete) Martinez of Spring, Texas; his son, John (Sue) Krutzfeldt of Wolsey; four grandchildren, Kaden, Reece, and Ryder Krutzfeldt, and Zoe Martinez; one sister, Dorene Eckmann; one brother-in-law, Gene DeVries; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorace DeVries; and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Eckmann.
