HIGHMORE — Gary McDonald, 86, of Highmore, passed away Tuesday, December 26, 2017, at his home surrounded by family.
Memorial service with military honors will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 30, at the United Methodist Church in Highmore. Burial will be at a later date in the Highmore Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 p.m. Friday with a 6 p.m. prayer service all at Luze Funeral Home in Highmore
Gary was born June 29, 1931, in Aberdeen to Milo and Gennevieve (Hoxey) McDonald. He joined the U.S. Navy in May of 1951, and served aboard the U.S.S. Boxer CVA-21 off the coast of Korea until 1953. He was honorably discharged in 1956, and awarded the Ambassador for Peace Award.
He was united in marriage to Donna LaFurge January 4, 1953.
He graduated from SDSU with a Bachelors Degree in Animal Science in 1961. He owned and operated McDonald’s Meat and Locker Service in Highmore. He was a member of the American Legion and the United Methodist Church. He was also a Mason.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; children, David McDonald of Wichita, Kan., and Janet (Jimmie) Nicolaus of Mitchell; grandchildren, Garrett (Christine) McDonald, Lauren (Gentry) Naill, Colin McDonald, Kylie (Sarah) Nicolaus, Sean Nicolaus, Brady Nicolaus; one great-granddaughter, Ily Naill; and sister, Aline Callaghan.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Jim McDonald.
Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Gary’s arrangements.
