MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Gayle Jean Hannah Albee, 75, of Minneapolis, Minn., passed away Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Augustana Health Care Center in Minneapolis, following a recent diagnosis of metastatic lung cancer.
There will be a private family service at a later date.
Gayle was born September 15, 1943, near De Smet to Warren and Betty Hannah. She graduated from De Smet High School in 1961, and then attended SDSU in Brookings. Her passions for fabrics and textiles led to her 1973-76 employment by Amluxen’s, Minneapolis’ premier fabric store, and later at Sears. She was instrumental in establishing KFAI-FM in Mpls. and WOJB-FM radio on the Lac Courte Oreilles (Ojibwa) reservation near Hayward, Wisc. She later became co-editor of the Hay River Review which she established in Prairie Farm, Wisc. In the late 1980’s, she served with the staff of the Christine Center (retreat) in Willard, Wisc. Returning to Mpls., she was active in Ventura Village primarily in support of homeless Native people and Elliot Park neighborhood with her community gardening.
She is survived by sisters, Nadine (Mel) Duncan of La Crosse Wisc., and Jackie (Bill) Driscoll of De Smet; aunt, Vera Abrahamson of Brookings; and her ex-husband, Robert (Sharon) Albee of Lynnwood Wash.; along with a host of cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Robert, Rodney, and David; and sister-in-law, Gwen Hannah.
