Girls’ teams square off at Huron Holiday Classic

HURON — Girls’ ruled the Huron Arena basketball court on Friday, as 14 area teams squared off in the Huron Holiday Classic. Beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing through the day, fans were able to watch some excellent basketball indoors on a cold and wintery day.
Action continues today, with five boys’ games on tap, beginning at 1 p.m.
Here is a synopsis of Friday’s girls’ games.

Leola/Frederick 48, Hitchcock-Tulare 44
The Leola-Frederick Titans overcame an early deficit and put three players in double figures, as they posted a 48-44, come-from-behind win over the Hitchcock-Tulare Lady Patriots in non-conference girls’ basketball action.
A back-and-forth game found the Lady Patriots up by three points, 38-35, after three quarters, but the Titans were not to be denied, rallying and pulling out the win.
Cassandra Hinz scored 16 points and had six rebounds for the Titans, who improve to 4-1 with the win. Madallyn Nordine had 15 and 6, while Michaela Podoll added 10 points. Abby Berreth led the L-F rebounders with eight rebounds.
Elizabeth Salmon led all scorers with 18 points for the Lady Patriots, who also got eight rebounds from Tyler Schone. Baylee Enander and Dannyn Peterson each had six rebounds.
The Lady Patriots are back in action on Thursday, hosting Northwestern in Tulare.

Lower Brule 68, Iroquois 15
The Lower Brule Lady Sioux exploded to a 29-2 lead after one quarter and coasted to a 68-15 win over the Iroquois Lady Chiefs Friday afternoon at the Huron Holiday Classic.
Maleighya Estes scored 20 points and Bariah LaRoche added 13 for Lower Brule, who improved to 5-2 with the win. Molly Jandreau and Katelyn Bortolussi each claimed four rebounds.
For the Lady Chiefs, who fall to 0-4, Jorja Huls scored three points and six other players had two points each. Katie Dubro had five rebounds and Allie Diehl claimed four for Iroquois, which will visit Aberdeen Christian on Tuesday.

James Valley Christian 30, Colman-Egan 26
Summer Gross hit a jump shot with 17 seconds on the clock to give the James Valley Christian Lady Vikings the lead, then iced the game after a steal with two free throws, leading JVC to a 30-26 win over the Colman-Egan Hawks Friday at the Huron Holiday Classic.
Brenna Held scored 13 points to lead JVC, which improved to 2-4 with the narrow win. Gross had six points and led all rebounders with 10 boards, while Karilyn Wieting added six points.

Madison Voelker had nine points to lead the Hawks, who fall to 2-4 with the loss. Haleigh Nicol led C-E on the boards with four rebounds.
The Lady Vikings host Wolsey-Wessington on Thursday.

Three players finished with double figures for the Ipswich Lady Tigers, lifting them into a 51-40 win over the Jones County Lady Coyotes Friday at the Huron Holiday Classic.
Ipswich, now 7-0 on the season, continued its winning streak with Kamryn Heinz as the leading scorer with 17 points. Aleah Steger added another 12 points, while Halle Heinz chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds.  
Savannah Krogman led the Lady Coyotes with 13 points, followed by Lilli Moore with eight points. Emily Jacobs had seven rebounds, while Krogman had six.

Faulkton Area 56, Chester Area 38
The Faulkton Area Torjans ended the game against the Chester Area Flyers with a 56-38 victory, Friday at the Huron Arena.
Both teams started off slow, as the first quarter ended with a 9-9 tie, before Faulkton Area took flight in the remaining three periods.
Three players were in double figures for the Trojans, Taylor Cramer led the team with 16 points, followed by Morgan Delius with 15, while Brooke Niederbaumer added 12.
Chester Area was led by Jadon Wages with 12 points, who was the only player in double figures for the Flyers. Dakota Alfson added eight more points, while Mackenna Larson finished with seven.
Faulkton Area will travel to Selby to tangle with the Herreid-Selby Area Wolverines on Thursday, Jan. 4, while Chester Area are set to host a game against the Dell Rapids St. Mary Lady Cardinals on Tuesday.

Faith 74, San Cent-Woon 48
The Faith Lady Longhorns stayed perfect on the year, takings its fifth straight win Friday, over the Sanborn Central-Woonsocket Blackhawks, 74-48, in girls’ basketball action at the Huron Holiday Classic.
The Lady Longhorns dominated the game as four players were sent into double figures.  
Kailyn Groves led the Lady Longhorns with 19 points, another 17 were added by Jayden Shoemaker, Sydnie Schauer with 11 points, while Mikenzy Miller added ten more.
The Blackhawks dropped to a 3-1 record with their first loss of the season. Tesa Jensen led the SC-W with 15 points, Abby Doering followed with seven and six more were added by both Tristan Ziebart and Abby Vermeulen. Megan Poyer had 10 rebounds, while Diering had seven.
The Blackhawks are set to travel to Emery on Tuesday for a battle with the Huskies.

Miller 49, EP-Jefferson 34
The Miller Rustlers fought hard for a 49-34 win over the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies Friday night at the Huron Holiday Classic.
The Rustlers efforts paid off as they improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Huskies dropped to a 2-3 record.
Leading the Rustlers was Kadye Fernholz with 21 points and 11 rebounds, who was the only player from both teams to make double figures. VonnaGail Schlechter finished with eight points, while Elise Brooks added seven.
The Huskies were led by Kayla Bertram with nine points, Riley Donnelly and Elise Aslesen followed; each added eight more.
Miller will make it’s first  of 2018 this Tuesday when they will host a game against the De Smet Bulldogs, while the Huskies are set to host the West Central Trojans on Tuesday.
