HARTFORD — Harold W. Shafer, 90, of Hartford, passed away Monday, May 28, 2018, at the Bethany Home in Sioux Falls.
A service celebrating his life will be 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 5, at the United Methodist Church in Redfield. Visitation will be 10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church. A remembrance ceremony will be 2 p.m. in Sunset Memory Gardens in Aberdeen with military honors.
Harold W. Shafer was born October 9, 1927, near Leola to Alfred and Bertha (Ruhs) Shafer. In 1951, he was drafted into the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1953.
He was united in marriage to Luella Wiederich September 4, 1953. He farmed and worked for machinery dealers in both Ashley, N.D. and Redfield. He was active in the community and was a member of the American Legion and the Long Lake Church.
He is survived by his children, Harley (Tammy) Shafer of Sioux Falls, Harvey Shafer of Crooks, Joy (Vincent) Powers of Hartford,  and Donna Davey of Newcastle, Neb; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Florence Diede of Redfield.
He is preceded in death by his wife; great-grandchild, Paxton Shafer; and 11 siblings.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Clay Kiser Legion Post #92, PO Box 2, Redfield, SD 57469.
