HDGL wraps first season

HURON — More than a dozen disc golfers participated in the first ever Huron Disc Golf League. The league recently completed its 10-week season.
“This was Huron’s first disc golf league ever and I feel it was a success,” said Ethan Marquardt, one of the league organizers.
“Throughout the weeks I’ve seen players improve their maximum distance and perform better as the weeks went on.”
The league came down to a one-one-one battle for the title between Paul Carver and Cesar Garcia. Disc golf is scored just like traditional golf - the fewer strokes that it takes to complete the course, the better.
Carver averaged 54.33 over the season, to Garcia’s 56.6. But the league allowed golfers to use the average of their top seven scores, which showed Carver edging Garcia 53.42 to 53.57.

Each week consisted of two rounds; one regular nine-hole tee pad round and one alternate tee pad round. The league started in late April and finished this past weekend.
Prize opportunities were given out throughout the weeks. An “Ace” pool was introduced the first week of the league, and each participant added a dollar to the pool each week, with the first person to score an ace collecting the proceeds. The Ace pool went to player Kyle Dunn in the next-to-the-last weekend of the league season.
Huron Disc Golf will be putting on a clinic for anyone wishing to know more about the sport. Huron Disc Golf will also be hosting a tournament in the near future. If anyone is interested in the clinic, tournament, or joining the league they can join the group on Facebook (Huron Disc Golf Club), or if anyone has any questions they can contact Marquardt at 605-670-2839.
“I would like to thank Clarence Cowan, a past Huron Disc golfer, and his disc golf shop, Out of Bounds Disc Golf Pro Shop for their sponsorship and support,” Marquardt said. “Cowan, who now lives in Texas, made our league logo.”
Marquardt also extended thanks to the Huron Parks and Recreation Department, which updated the disc golf course’s baskets, installed garbage and are planning to make further updates to the course later this summer.
