HURON — The Huron High School Speech & Debate Team traveled to its first competition of the season on Nov. 2 when they traveled to the Aberdeen Golden Eagle Tournament.
Huron had two students place in competition. Nathan Maxted placed fourth in Varsity Extemp Speaking and Nathan Farmer placed fourth in Novice Extemp Speaking.
“Our Extemp Team started strong, placing someone in both the Novice and Varsity divisions,” said head coach Mitch Gaffer. “The coaches are pleased with the progress of our Extemp speakers.”

Overall, SF O’Gorman won the tournament.  Huron did not place in final standings.
“I wish we would have had more time to prepare our other Speech events,” Gaffer added. “We are still working on writing, memorization, and refinement but we ran out of time so off to Aberdeen we went.  With so many new pieces and new student competitors, we had a hard time placing in the rounds.”
Gaffer said the debate events were not ready Friday, so they weren’t entered.
“You can’t place at a tournament unless you have Speech and Debate events covered,” he said. “You just can’t get enough points.
“Our plan is to complete case writing and start Debate rounds practice this week to be ready for Sioux Falls,” Gaffer added. “It’s been slow going but we’re making progress.”
The next tournament will be the SF Washington and Roosevelt Tournament on Nov. 9-10.
