HURON — The Huron Speech & Debate Team traveled to the Brookings Bell Debate Tournament on Dec. 15-16.
Overall, the team finished 10th out of 21 teams at the tournament. SF O’Gorman was first and Aberdeen Central was second.
Top finishers from Huron were:
• In JV Public Forum Debate, Thomas Mayfield and Nathan Maxted went 3-2 and placed third, and Sofia Ledeneva andJacob Hotchkiss went 3-2 and placed fourth.
• In Humorous Interp, Reese Uecker advanced to the final round and placed fifth.

• In US Extemp, Nathan Maxted advanced to the final round and placed fifth.
• In Duet Interp, Jasmine Snow and Reese Uecker just missed advancing to finals but finished sixth overall.
“We’re showing signs of improvement,” said head coach Mitch Gaffer. “This was a big tournament and we were able to get students on the awards stage in several events.
“As we get more students out and more events covered, our team placing gets better,” he added. “This is what we need when we go to our next tournament, the important O’Gorman CFC Tournament in January.  We have ground to make up in the conference, but we’re starting to see the gains necessary to catch up.”
The next tournament for the Speech & Debate Team will be the second of three Central Forensic Conference tournaments at O’Gorman High School on Jan. 6.
