“We definitely had some good things happen,” said head coach Mitch Gaffer. “The interp team showed strong improvement, putting four into finals and making the awards stage in three events. It was great making the stage in LD Debate, as well. We’re making slow but definite progress. The coaches are very proud of the work ethic we’ve seen from many on the team!”

Top finishers from Huron:
• In Dramatic Interp, Huron advanced two to the final round: Cameron Cutshaw placed 3rd and MacKenzie Copeland placed 4th.
• In Humorous Interp, Huron advanced two to the final round: Tessa Gogolin placed 4th and Angel Olivo placed 5th.  Lily Halter finished 6th, just missing the final round.
• In Program Oral Interp, Rheya Wilk finished 2nd. (No final round)
• In Novice LD Debate, MacKenzie Copeland went 2-2 and finished 2nd.

“Unfortunately, we traveled small to this tournament,” Gaffer said. “We had many on the team not able to travel for a variety of reasons: Quiz Bowl, work, etc. That put us behind in making a run for a top place in the CFC this year.

“This is the final year for the CFC Conference, as the South Dakota speech/debate community moves away from closed conference tournaments to more open invitation tournaments,” he added.

“I’m sad to see the CFC go, having been the CFC President for the past 35 years. Huron has had a great run while I’ve coached here, tallying 19 CFC Championships and 14 second place finishes. The Huron community has much to be proud of!”

The next tournament for the team will be the Watertown Speech Fiesta on January 21-22.
