HURON — The Huron High School Speech & Debate team attended the SF Invitational Tournaments this past weekend. The speech events were held on Nov. 3 at SF Washington, while the debate events were held at SF Roosevelt on Nov. 4.
The Huron team had a small entry, taking only five students for speech events and three students for debate events.
The team is behind in its preparation, but is getting students out as soon as they are ready. Another group will attend their first tournament in Aberdeen this coming weekend.
“We’ve had a variety of things happen that has hurt our ability to get enough student practice time to get prepared and get our season started,” said head coach Mitch Gaffer. “Between the play, marching band, student council, All State, and regular studies, we’ve found ourself behind in where we want to be. We’ve been working hard to get caught up.”
Top Finishers for Huron include:
• In Varsity US Extemp, Nathan Maxted finished eighth.
• In Varsity Public Forum Debate, Sean Preston and Kevin Baltzer went 3-2 finishing ninth, just out of the quarter-final rounds.
“It was nice to have some success in Sioux Falls, despite being behind and traveling small,” Gaffer said. “Sean and Kevin has a strong weekend in Varsity Public Forum Debate, and finished as the first team out of the quarter-finals. But we’re happy they had such a strong showing. Nathan’s strong finish in Varsity US Extemp made for a good start to his season.”
The next tournament for the Speech & Debate Team is the Aberdeen Golden Eagle Challenge planned today and Saturday.
