Hitchcock-Tulare girls win 281 Conference Tournament

HURON - In a well-fought championship battle Thursday night at the Huron Arena, the Hitchcock-Tulare Lady Patriots defeated the Highmore-Harrold Pirates by a score of 46-39 to claim the 281 Conference Tournament title.
The two teams battled through a tight first quarter, with neither team having a real advantage on the court or on the scoreboard. A quick four points to close the frame left Hitchcock-Tulare with a two-point advantage, and they used that momentum to propel into the second quarter, opening the quarter on a 6-0 run before the Pirates could net a point on the quarter.
Highmore-Harrold came back, however, and had even taken the lead before the second quarter was half-through. The teams traded barbs throughout the rest of the first half, with the Pirates getting the last run of the half to carry a 24-20 lead into the break.
The Patriots jumped out in the second half with four points to quickly tie the game. The two teams proceeded to hang close throughout the entire second half, with neither team gaining a lead of more than four points over the other. Hitchcock-Tulare had the lead at the end and created distance with free throws to reach the final tally.
Highmore-Harrold falls to 7-3 with the loss. They were led in scoring by Grace Knox with 12. Oakley Jandreau added 10 points and was one of two Pirates with six rebounds to lead the team. Letha Jessen also nabbed six boards.
Hitchcock-Tulare runs its record to 8-3 with the victory as three scorers reached double figures. Dannyn Peterson scored 13 to lead the team while Madison Hofer and Elizabeth Salmen each added 10 points. Salmen also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
The Lady Patriots travel to Aberdeen to take on Aberdeen Christian Monday. Highmore-Harrold is off until Thursday, when they travel to Wolsey to take on Wolsey-Wessington.

Third place
Wolsey-Wessington 46, Sanborn Central-Woonsocket 43

The Wolsey-Wessington Lady Warbirds clamped down on the defensive end of the floor in the final quarter Thursday afternoon, as they pulled away for a 46-43 win over the Sanborn Central-Woonsocket Blackhawks in the third-place game of the girls’ 281 Conference Tournament at Huron Arena.
The Blackhawks led by three after one quarter and pushed the margin to six after three quarters, but the Lady Warbirds more than made up the difference, outscoring SC-W 15-6 in the final frame to claim the third place hardware.
Cortney Sprecher led a balanced Wolsey-Wessington attack with 12 points, as nine Lady Warbirds got into the scorebook in the game. Chantel Haider added eight and Leah Williams had seven points and Haider led the way on the boards with a game-high seven rebounds.
Trinity Boschee scored 15 points and snagged six rebounds to pace the Blackhawks. Both Mariah Jost and Trista White added six points in the game.
For Wolsey-Wessington, now 4-5, they are back in action Saturday afternoon at Potter County, while Sanborn Central, 4-8, is off until Tuesday, when they travel to Hanson.

Fifth place
James Valley Christian 46, Wessington Springs 26
The James Valley Christian Lady Vikings outscored the Wessington Springs Lady Spartans 19-8 in the second and third quarters Thursday afternoon, to power away to a 46-26 win in the girls’ consolation championship game of the 281 Conference Tournament at Huron Arena.
Karilyn Wieting scored 15 points to pace the Lady Vikings, while Abby Kate Hamilton came off the bench to score 11. Emily Hasart led JVC with seven rebounds.
Wessington Springs was led by Piper Jones, who had eight points and seven rebounds. Avery Orth had seven points and seven boards for the Lady Spartans.
JVC travels to Ipswich Saturday afternoon while Wessington Springs is at Andes Central-Dakota Christian on Tuesday.

Iroquois-Doland 67, Sunshine Bible Academy 26
The Iroquois-Doland Lady Chiefs notched their second win of the season Thursday morning, derailing the Sunshine Bible Academy Crusaders 67-26 to take 7th place in the girls’ portion of the 281 Conference Tournament.
Iroquois-Doland sophomore guard Katie Dubro may petition to have all of the remaining games on the Lady Chiefs’ schedule changed to morning games, as she torched the nets for 35 points, including seven three-point field goals. Both are Iroquois school records and are believed to be 281 Conference Tournament records in the girls’ division as well. The Iroquois records Dubro broke on Thursday were held by Krista (DeJong) Robinson, who is now the girls’ basketball coach at James Valley Christian.
Jorja Huls added 14 points and Kaitlyn Maas had seven rebounds, as I-D improve to 2-9, with a pair of wins over the Crusaders.
SBA was led by Ruthe Lopez’s 13 points, while Bethany Konechne had a game-high nine rebounds. The Crusaders slide to 0-10 with the loss.
I-D returns to action tonight, when they host Great Plains Lutheran in Doland, while SBA hosts Jones County, also tonight.
