HURON — The Huron Middle School took top honors for the first time at their third annual quiz bowl meet held on Monday night. The second place team was from Pierre, third place was Madison and fourth was another Huron team.
Teams included students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades from Huron, De Smet, James Valley, Madison, Pierre and Holy Trinity.
“It has doubled in size from last year when we had eight teams. This year we have 15 teams,” said Colleen Jensen. “I think this is because schools are realizing that academic competitions are important and high ability students need the challenge.”
It was held as a traditional style quiz bowl, each team had 15 seconds to answer questions before the opportunity was passed to their opponent.
“They are winners just to undertake the quiz bowl challenge but it’s always nice to bring home a trophy,” Jensen said.
“It is wonderful to see students work together in teams to come up with a unified answer,” said HMS teacher and reader judge, Tammy Barnes.
