PIERRE — A shortened week for many schools across the state, and a week that some schools completely dismissed classes altogether, led to lower reported cases both at the K-12 level and among the state’s colleges, universities, and technical schools, according to data reported to the South Dakota Department of Health (DOH).
After a significant peak the week of Nov. 8-14 of 1,044 cases, K-12 schools reported 789 cases the week of Nov. 15-21 and reduced that to 416 reported cases Nov. 22-28.
According to reporting to the DOH, K-12 schools across the state currently have 801 active COVID-19 cases, with 304 schools currently reporting at least one active case. Of those 304, 77 schools report at least three active cases.
For the first week since September, a S.D. institute of higher learning is reporting on the weekly data to the DOH that it has no active cases on campus. Colleges reported 104 new positive cases Nov. 22-28, with a number of campuses closing after the Thanksgiving break or returning only for finals tests.
State colleges report 193 active cases, and 12 of the 14 colleges that report an active case on campus report having at least three cases within their school.
