HURON — Like many other organizations around the nation, Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) is celebrating National Volunteer Month, in appreciation of the many individuals who give of their time, talents and energy to help the hospital care for the people of this region.
April contains National Volunteer Week, which was established in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration focusing on the impact and power of volunteerism and service as an integral aspect of our civic leadership.
At HRMC, volunteers serve in many ways including through the Auxiliary and HRMC’s Community Hospice program. As a small token of the hospital’s appreciation, HRMC sent personalized thank-you cards with a cafeteria certificate to active auxiliary and hospice volunteers. The purpose of the HRMC Auxiliary is to promote and advance the welfare of HRMC by serving patients and assisting with and contributing to charitable projects. Auxiliary volunteers provide daily support by offering refreshments and assistance in hospital lounges, assisting visitors with hospital and patient information at the information desks, delivering newspapers to patients, and caring for and delivering plants and floral arrangements to patients. Volunteers also manage and staff the hospital gift shops located in the main hospital and Central Tower lobbies.
Each year, auxiliary volunteers donate nearly 6,000 hours to the hospital, which requires at least 30 volunteers per week. More volunteers are currently needed in a variety of roles. Both men and women are invited and encouraged to share their talents.
Hospice volunteers assist with various activities, including working in the office, assisting with special events and being a companion in hospice patients’ homes to assist with household chores or provide caregiver relief. Hospice volunteers or community members interested in volunteering are invited to an appreciation tea at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 30, at the HRMC Legacy Plaza Auditorium.
