HSD, HPD release joint statements on handgun incident

HURON — Wednesday evening, Huron School District parents received an email statement from the Huron School District and Huron Police Department, regarding a reported incident at the Huron Middle School that occurred on Wednesday.
The statement read:
“The Huron School District and Huron Police Department are investigating a report of a student in possession of a handgun on Tuesday, October 10, at the Huron Middle School. The suspect was not in school today and has not been located by law enforcement. As a precautionary measure, there has been and will be an additional police presence throughout the District.”
Thursday afternoon, the two entities released a second statement:
“The Huron School District and the Huron Police Department collaborated on a report received of a handgun at the Huron Middle School on Tuesday, October 10th. A juvenile suspect was located and interviewed regarding the alleged report. The Huron Police Department has forwarded all information to the Beadle County State Attorney’s office for review.”
Both releases were signed off by Huron Superintendent Kraig Steinhoff, Huron Police Chief Kevin Van Diepen, and Huron Interim Police Chief Derek Layher.
