Huron 13U splits during first day at Brookings tourney


BROOKINGS – In the first day of the Cubby’s Bar and Grill Classic in Brookings, Huron’s 13U Teener team split a pair of games in pool play.

In the first game, Huron defeated host Brookings Maroon by the score of 11-9. Brookings took the lead 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Huron scored five in the top of the sixth and cut off a Brookings rally in the bottom of the inning to hold on for the victory.

Parker Bischoff got the start on the mound, going 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs and striking out two. He was relieved by Hunter Fenske and Chase Schuchhardt.

Cooper Bischoff had a big game at the plate, tallying three hits and driving in three runs. Two of his knocks went for doubles and he also stole a base.

Kaleb Rashaad and Fenske each had a pair of singles and drew two walks at the plate for Huron. Fenske added a steal to his ledger on the day.

Landon Schutt and Schuchhardt each stole two bases and Jeremy Hofer also nabbed a base.

The second game saw the West Central Boltz pull out a 7-3 victory over Huron with a four-run sixth inning.

Davis Chase started the game on the mound for Huron, going four innings, allowing three runs and striking out eight. He was relieved by Cooper Bischoff, who struggled with his control in one inning of relief, walking six and uncorking two wild pitches while allowing four runs. Tyce Huber pitched the final inning.

The Huron offense could only scratch together two hits against West Central, though Hofer and Dalton Rathjen each stole a base after reaching via walk.

Huron’s record moves to 8-7 with the split. Huron faces Sioux Falls Post 15 at 1:30 p.m. today and Yankton Reds at 3:45 p.m. in pool play to determine seeding for championship bracket play on Sunday.

Huron’s 14U team won its opening game Friday morning over Sioux Falls East by the score of 6-5 and will face Sioux Falls West Red and Brookings Black today in pool play to determine potential Sunday championship bracket play.
