HURON — The Huron Area Master Gardeners recently completed a community service project thinning and transplanting the hosta bed on the east side of the Women’s Building at the State Fairgrounds.
The popular Master Gardener Plant Sale will be held Saturday, May 26, from 9 to 11 a.m. at a new location — the Women’s Building on the State Fairgrounds. The public is invited.
All manner of plants and gardening equipment and books will be available for purchase. Proceeds from this year’s plant sale will be matched by Modern Woodmen and used for scholarships to the Statewide Master Gardener Training Program which will be held in Huron in June and July. Those interested in becoming Master Gardeners can apply online or call president Nancy Tofflemire at 352-7560 for more information. The deadline to register for the training is May 25.

Other recent activities have included a seed exchange and presentations by Donna Steele on growing tree peonies, Shelly Wilson demonstrating how to start seedlings in a self-watering container, and Cindy Eilers on soil health. Some members attended the gardening event, the Miller Spring Fling, and Joanne Groves attended a regional workshop in Brookings. Dianna Neuharth works on the State Fair Horticulture Exhibit book and shared that Floriculture is being added to the static exhibits.
Joanne Groves, Shelly Wilson, and Carol Anderson had a booth at the Discovery Festival at McCrory Gardens in Brookings, demonstrating how to start seedlings in a self-watering container.
