PIERRE — Several Huron high school track and field athletes won events and many more scored points at the Governor Qualifier in Pierre Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers earned third-place finishes in both the girls’ and boys’ races. Pierre won both divisions and Sully Buttes took second, edging Huron in both races.
A pair of Tiger relay teams carried their respective batons across the line first. The girls’ 4 x 800 team of Braylee Thomas, Tenley Buddenhagen, Alexis Feenstra and Samantha Shoultz broke the tape in a time of 10:53.47 to win by 40 seconds.
The boys’ 4 x 400 team, made up of Max Kranzler, Cade McNeil, Carlos Yanes and Derick Siemonsma ran a 3:51.86 to edge a team from Sully Buttes.
Individual winners included Hayden White, who won the 110-high hurdles in a time of 17.72, while Josiah Savery gave the Tigers a double-win in the hurdles’ races, as he took the 300-meter hurdles in 46.81. Savery also finished fifth and Bryan Santiago Contreras was seventh in the 110 hurdles and Santiago Contreras was sixth in the 300.
Reese Rozell won the girls’ 800 meter run in a time of 2:53.78, as the freshmen stunned the field.
The other individual winner was Matt Katz, who won the pole vault with a height of 11-9.
Huron dominated the girls’ pole vault, although no Tiger won the event. Leah Pyle was third, Nightin Gayday finished fourth, McKenzie Paulson was fifth and Kylie Hanebuth took sixth.
Buddenhagen finished second in the open 400-meter dash. Shoultz was seventh and Feenstra took eighth, and Alaina Dale placed in both girls’ hurdle events, taking seventh in the 100 and matching that finish in the 300-meter event.
Lexi Gilbert finished second in the girls’ 100, with teammates Heaven Gainey taking fifth and Brynn Gose took sixth. Gilbert came back to take fourth in the 200-meter dash and Gainey was sixth, while Gose finished fourth in the long jump.
Jayda Hennrich finished sixth in the girls’ triple jump.
Other placers in the boys’ field included Siemonsma, who finished fourth in the 400, while McNeill took sixth in the race. Teegan Evers finished second in the high jump and Tanner Marone took fourth in the discus for the Tigers.
Kler Hae finished sixth in the boys’ long jump and Isaiah Decker grabbed eighth in the shot put.
