Huron finishes 11th in Class AA state tourney

HURON — The second and final round of the Class AA State Girls’ Golf Tournament didn’t turn out as well as the opening round for the Huron Tigers.
After recording a season-best team score of 370 during the first 18 holes of play on Monday at Broadland Creek Golf Course, the Tigers dipped to 397 during the second 18 holes of competition on Tuesday to finish the tournament at 767, which placed them 11th in the final standings.
“Today was a different day for the girls. They learned that it is hard to play their best two days in a row,” Huron coach Chris Rozell said. “However, there were many positives throughout the day. They all battled today in their rounds.
“As I have said in the past, each time this group plays in a meet, they are getting better for the future, and today was definitely a learning experience,” he said. “I am very proud of all four of the girls for a great season and state meet.”
Junior Jayda Shillingstad turned in another solid round for the Tigers. After shooting a career-best 81 on Monday, she carded an 86 on Tuesday for a total of 167.
Shillingstad finished tied for 15th overall in the field of 89 golfers to earn All-State honors.
“I hope that inspires her to play this summer to prepare for a very successful senior season,” Rozell said of Shillingstad’s performance in the state tournament.
Eighth-grader Karlie Bigelow finished tied for 39th in the final standings for Huron after shooting a 96 on Tuesday to finish with a two-day total of 185.
Kenya Bigelow, who is a seventh-grader, shot a 105 Tuesday after recording a 101 in the opening round, to finish 69th. Eighth-grader Mattie Huber rounded out the lineup with 209 to finish tied for 72nd. She shot 99 on Monday and turned in a 110 on Tuesday.
With four of the top nine golfers in the tournament, Sioux Falls O’Gorman cruised to the Class AA state team title. The Knights finished with a two-day total of 611, which put them 41 strokes in front of second-placed Aberdeen Central, which finished at 652 after shaving six strokes off its 329 total from Monday.
Rapid City Stevens was third at 668, followed by Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 690. Brandon Valley finished at 692 to edge Yankton by a stroke for the fifth spot.

Sioux Falls O’Gorman teammates Emily Olson and Carly Kunkel were first and second, respectively, in the individual stands.
After shooting a 70 on Monday, Olson finished with a 76 on Tuesday to claim the Class AA state title with a score of 146. Kunkel used a 75 Tuesday to finish a stroke off her pace through the first 18 holes on the 36-hole tournament for a total score of 149.
Sydney Wirebaugh of Aberdeen Central and Natalie Young of Rapid City Stevens had scores of 151 to finish tied for third, while Liz Duncan of Brandon Valley was fifth at 154 and Sophie Jansa of O’Gorman was sixth at 155.
Cassidy Gough of Aberdeen Central matched her toal of 78 from Monday to finish seventh overall at 156, while Brooke Pierson of Brookins was eighth at 158 and Jenna Sutcliffe of O’Gorman was ninth at 161.
