Huron golfers set for state

PIERRE — The Huron boys’ golf team is set to close the season at the Class AA State Meet, which is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at Hillsview Golf Course in Pierre.
Play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. both days.
Coach Chris Rozell is hoping his team can capitalize on its previous experience on the course during the season-ending event.
“It is a familiar course for all of our players, so that should be a good advantage for us,” Rozell said.

Nolan Wiegel, who is the lone senior on the roster, will lead Huron into the state tourney. He will be looking to improve on his finish from a year ago, when he tied for the sixth spot.
“Nolan Wiegel has worked hard to prepare himself for his final rounds of varsity golf,” Rozell said. “I hope that it all comes together for him the final two days.”
Joining Wiegel at the state meet for the Tigers will be juniors Mason Rozell and Jacob Wehde, sophomore Nathan Gauer, freshman Will Smith and eighth-grader Landon Roberts.
Rozell made a push for a top-25 finish in last year’s state meet for Huron. He was 30th in the 100-golfer field.
Gauer will be returning to the course where he recorded one of the season highlights for the Tigers. He hit a hole-in-one on hole No. 14 earlier this season at Hillsview Golf Course.
“My goal is for us to put together two solid days of golf,” Rozell said.
Sioux Falls Washington is the defending Class AA champions, while Sioux Falls Lincoln and Pierre shared the second spot last season. Rounding out the top five were Sioux Falls O’Gorman and Aberdeen Central.
“It is a solid group of teams and players for this year’s state tournament,” Rozell said. “It will be a high level of golf that will be fun to watch over two days.”
