Huron gymnasts eighth in Brookings

Aaron Jorenby/BROOKINGS REGISTER Huron’s Maiya Hein competes on the beat during the Patty Jorgenson Invitational held Saturday in Brookings.

BROOKINGS — After setting a new season-best score earlier in the week, the Huron gymnastics team fell short of that mark, but had some individual improvement during the Patty Jorgenson Invitational on Saturday.

“Improvements are happening at the right time,” Huron coach Julie King said.

The Tigers finished eighth in the 8-team event with a score of 122.350.

Mitchell used a score of 148.00 to claim the top spot, while Watertown had a score of 141.950 to edge Harrisburg, which finished at 141.250, for the second spot.

Watertown’s Myah Morris won the all-around with a score of 38.250, while Mitchell teammates Bentley Bates and Joslin Sommerville were second and third, respectively, with scores of 237.500 and 36.800.

Maiya Hein was 19th for Huron at 31.350, followed by teammates Eastyn Eichstadt at 30.950, Adison Gross at 27.300 and Katelyn Radke at 24.900.

Huron had a pair of gymnasts finish in the top 20 on the vault. Eichstadt shared the 14th spot with a score of 8.950, while Hein shared the 19th spot with an 8.900.

“The Tigers vaulted strong today,” King said. “Eastyn had her personal best with an 8.95. They looked great.”
Cameron Ruth led Huron on the bars with a 7.850 to share the 26th spot. Eichstadt was 32nd at 7.300 and Hein shared the 35th spot at 7.000.

“Cameron Ruth had a clean bar routine scoring a 7.85,” King said.

Wilson turned in an 8.350 to finish tied for 18th on the beam for the Tigers.

Hein led Huron in the floor exercise with an 8.700, which put her just outside the top 20. Ruth finished 33rd with an 8.000.

“Floor is getting more dynamic and energetic,” King said. “It’s great to see the improvements.”

The Tigers will return to action at 5:30 p.m. Friday with the Huron Invitational at the Tiger Activity Center.
