Huron Junior Legion fifth in Yankton tourney

YANKTON – The Huron Junior Legion had an excellent weekend at the Daryl Bernard Classic in Yankton, coming away with three victories and one loss, earning fifth place.

On Friday, Huron opened the tournament against the Sioux Falls Post 911 Chargers with a big victory, an 18-2 run-rule win in four innings.

The Huron offense scored in every inning, putting up one in the first, five in the second, four in the third, and eight in the fourth.

Logan Leyendecker tossed four innings on the mound, allowing two runs, striking out three.

Huron’s hitters pounded out 15 hits and had 21 baserunners overall in the game along with stealing 10 bases.

Trace Wenz, Tanner Gilbert, and Kolby Hofer each had three hits. One of Hofer’s hits was a double, while Gilbert swiped three bases and Wenz stole two bases.

Kolten Ogle and Tyson Pfitzer each had a pair of hits and stole a base. One of Pfitzer’s knocks was a double.

Bubba Peterson drove a triple. Layne Wenzel stole two bases and Jack Pedersen swiped a base.

Huron won every team measure on the scoreboard against Creighton except on the scoreboard. One untimely error led to five runs for Creighton in the top of the third inning, and that was the difference in a 6-1 victory.

Kolby Hofer opened the game on the mound, throwing three innings, allowing 5 unearned runs and striking out four. Tanner Gilbert pitched the final three innings, allowing one run without allowing a hit.

The Huron offense totaled four hits, with Jack Pedersen’s double the highlight.

In Saturday’s action, Huron struck first against the Yankton Blacksox team, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning and held on for a 5-4 victory.

Wenzel threw a complete game, going six innings, allowing four runs and striking out seven.

The Huron bats tallied 12 hits in the game. Ogle led the way with a double and a pair of singles. Gilbert, Wenz, and Wenzel each had a pair of singles.

In the second game Saturday, Huron squared off against the Brandon Valley Lynx 16U in the fifth place game and scored a shutout victory, 8-0.

Jack Pedersen was nearly perfect on the mound, allowing one hit and no walks, hitting one batter and striking out two Lynx hitters. Pedersen got through four innings in an incredibly efficient 40 pitches.

Three Huron hitters had multiple hits as Wenzel led the way with a double, a single, and a stolen base.

Wenz and Bubba Peterson each had a pair of singles. Peterson added three steals and Wenz swiped two bags.

Leyendecker and Jackson Mattke had doubles in the victory.

The Junior Legion team moves to 7-6 after the weekend and is back in action Wednesday, hosting a doubleheader against Brookings beginning at 5 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
